Scaling and root planing, also known as deep cleaning, are intended to stop and reverse the development of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease starts as gingivitis, which is caused by plaque and bacteria build-up that has infected the gums surrounding the teeth. When gingivitis advances, it can create pockets between the teeth and start to eat away at the bone that anchors the teeth. If this goes untreated, the bone that holds and supports the teeth may be destroyed requiring surgical intervention.
Scaling and root planing are procedures that we provide here to eliminate the source of periodontal infection so that your gums will heal and restore your mouth to health. Routine cleanings do not go deep enough after periodontal disease has started because the problem areas go below the gumline. Scaling is the process of cleaning below the gumline to remove plaque, tartar and bacterial toxins that have developed below the surface of the gums. Scaling is followed by root planing, or smoothing the surface of the roots and removing any infected areas. In order to keep you comfortable, we numb the area with anesthesia.
